Meditation is
a way of becoming more aware and alive to our moment-to-moment experience.
All its effects, from simple relaxation to spiritual insight follow
from that. In the short term, meditation is an antidote to stress,
a means of becoming calmer and more self-possessed; in the long
term, it is a tool with which we can transform ourselves fundamentally.
With consistent
effort and regular practice, we begin to free ourselves from the
limitations of habit. In meditation, we learn not to react habitually
to our experience, but to respond creatively and with awareness.
People attending
our centres learn two essential Buddhist meditation practices: Mindfulness
of Breathing, which enhances awareness and peace of mind; and Metta
Bhavana, or 'development of loving kindness', which brings about
a gentle but radical transformation of our emotional world. Meditation
is taught by members of the Western Buddhist Order, who are experienced
meditators. Classes and courses are open to all - you need not be
interested in Buddhism.
We hold three
public classes each week: two Introductory and
one Intermediate.
Introductory
Class
This class held
every Wednesday from 7:30pm - 10:00pm is especially suited to newcomers.
These classes offer an introduction to traditional Buddhist meditations.
There are also meditation workshops, discussions on Buddhism and
talks by visiting speakers. You may come along any Wednesday evening.
Cost - £5.00
or £3.00 (low wage charge)
Friday
Lunchtime Meditation Class
This
is a drop-in meditation class which is run at the Centre
from 1-2pm every Friday. It provides an introduction to two
traditional Buddhist mediations (mindfulness of breathing
and loving kindness). It is a friendly, informal class and
there is the opportunity to have tea and biscuits as well.
If you can, arrive a little early and have a chat with one
of the team.
If you would
like to come to one of our classes, please contact the centre
or drop in on any Wednesday evening.
Meditation at Essex University
We
hope to re-start the Monday lunchtime meditation class in the Chaplaincy
Centre from October 2007. In the meantime, staff and students
are welcome to attend the Wednesday evening drop-in class at the
Buddhist Centre.
